Imperial Kaftans

Turning right from the gate you will come to the Seferli Odasi, which is now used to house a splendid collection of kaftans worn by sultans right back to Sultan Mehmed II, their patterns clearly the model for many latterday Ottoman fabrics. When a sultan died it was the custom to store away his clothing which is how these garments have managed to survive in such immaculate condition. To look at them is to realise what a
deleterious effect too much palace cuisine had on imperial waistlines, while to gaze on the costumes of the later 19 th century is to realize how much color drained out of the empire as it slowly westernized.
