On the southern of the Golden Horn between Fener and Ayvansaray , Balat was a poorer neighborhood than Fener

with which it is often paired. Like Haskoy, it had a large jewish population, which means that several important

synagogues and other jewish establishments survive here alongside a mixture of churches and mosques. Even today

parts of Balat are very run down despite an injection of UNESCO/EU cash. Other parts, however, are gentrifying fast.
