The museum ws built as the Church of St. Savior in Chora by Byzantine Emperor Justinian. It took its contemporary shape in the 11. Century. Logotet Theodoros Metochites produced the frescoes and mosaics, which today constitute one of the world's most important examples of early Byzantine pictorial art.
